Deep Friars mix bold alt/math rock instrumentation with storytelling more typically found in folk songs. Routinely genre mashing additional flavours from gospel, metal and prog, the punk ballad singalongs get zesty quickly. The band have built a reputation for tight, technical, theatrical live shows, bursting with gregarious energy and disarming honesty.
Simon Grubb, lyricist, vocalist and rhythm guitarist, approached the other members with a song he'd had saved as a note on his phone for the best part of a decade. They quickly found a shared appreciation of songs that weave simple stories with colourful language through ambitious forms and dense instrumentation. Simon's wife had a dream in which she named the band 'Deep Friars', which resulted in a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Deep Friars have been busy since their inception, meticulously writing and recording, and now their debut EP 'Befriending Birds, Singing with Snakes' arrives this November. The EP is filled with tales of hope and grief set against the backdrop of Tasmania's forests, streets and beaches.
