Deep Friars mix bold alt/math rock instrumentation with storytelling more typically found in folk songs. Routinely genre mashing additional flavours from gospel, metal and prog, the punk ballad singalongs get zesty quickly. The band have built a reputation for tight, technical, theatrical live shows, bursting with gregarious energy and disarming honesty. Devised in 2020 by 4 of Hobart's busiest and quirkiest players, Deep Friars have since been hard at work. Their debut EP 'Befriending Birds, Singing with Snakes' is filled with tales of hope and grief against the backdrop of Tasmania's forests, streets and beaches.

Simon Grubb, lyricist, vocalist and rhythm guitarist, approached the other members with a song he'd had saved as a note on his phone for the best part of a decade. They quickly found a shared appreciation of songs that weave simple stories with colourful language through ambitious forms and dense instrumentation. Simon's wife had a dream in which she named the band 'Deep Friars', which resulted in a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Deep Friars have been busy since their inception, meticulously writing and recording, and now share their debut EP 'Befriending Birds, Singing with Snakes'. The release is filled with tales of hope and grief set against the backdrop of Tasmania's forests, streets and beaches, layered with the punchy and chops-laden parts Deep Friars are known for.

When sharing the stage with touring acts, Deep Friars willingly offer assistance with backline where feasible. Being comprised of 4 busy players, there's high-end, well-maintained backline available in the interest of aiding tour viability. This is partly owing to the way in which Simon and Luke are tied to the locally-loved preowned instrument store 'Topshelf Instruments'. The two members also manage and host 'Mathletics Carnival' which is an annual mini-festival that puts 10 bands across 2 stages, supplying all backline and selling out both years the festival has run.
